NGOs have a vital role in helping to get more people enjoying the outdoors in a responsible way. Government and its agencies can benefit greatly from involving partner organisations in their own educational and promotional efforts, especially where government policy is aligned with the objectives of the NGO. Yet they also need to acknowledge that NGOs have an important role to play as ‘critical friends’, standing up for the public interest where necessary. This presentation will look at how government bodies can best engage with NGOs and will discuss a number of successful examples of behaviour change related to outdoor access in Scotland.
